About Bumthang
Tucked into the heart of central Bhutan, Bumthang is one of the Kingdom's most fascinating and charming destinations. Winding roads thread through tall evergreen pine forests and open into wide, breathtaking valleys, revealing a region with a distinct individuality that captivates visitors and sets it apart from the rest of the country. Bumthang is made up of four smaller valleys: Tang, Ura, Choekhor, and Chumey. Deeply spiritual and shrouded in religious legend, the region is home to some of Bhutan's oldest Buddhist temples and monasteries, including Jambay Lhakhang and Kurjey Lhakhang, where an air of peace and tranquility lingers in every courtyard. Bumthang is also the traditional home of the great Buddhist teacher Pema Lingpa, whose descendants gave rise to the present royal dynasty. Beyond its spiritual sites, Bumthang offers a rich variety of experiences. Visitors can browse the region's distinctive hand-woven textiles, especially the colorful woolen yathra of Chumey, and taste local specialties such as Swiss-style cheese and the beer brewed in the valley. Fabulous hiking trails wind through forests and farmland, and museums and heritage sites bring the region's history to life. Whether you come for pilgrimage, adventure, or simply the quiet beauty of the mountains, Bumthang leaves a lasting impression.
