About Thimphu
As the capital of Bhutan and the heart of its government, religion, and commerce, Thimphu is a city unlike any other. Here, gleaming modern development stands side by side with ancient traditions, creating a blend that is both surprising and endlessly fascinating. Thimphu may not look like the capital cities you know. There are no skyscrapers or crowded skylines, and it is said to be one of the few capitals in the world without a single traffic light. Yet this only adds to its charm, making it a lively, welcoming, and fitting center for the Kingdom. Its streets are home to civil servants, expatriates, and the robed monk body, a mix of people that gives the city its distinctive energy. Despite its growth, Thimphu holds firmly to its national identity. Traditional Bhutanese architecture shapes the cityscape, with intricately painted wooden facades, sloping roofs, and ornate windows appearing on shops, offices, and homes alike. Landmarks such as Tashichho Dzong, the seat of government and the monastic body, and the golden Buddha Dordenma overlooking the valley reflect a city where faith and daily life remain closely intertwined.
