Journey details

Known to its people as Druk Yul, the "Land of the Thunder Dragon," the Kingdom of Bhutan is a land of rich and distinctive culture. Perhaps no force has shaped the Bhutanese character and way of thinking more deeply than the teachings of Lord Buddha. These timeless truths first travelled into the country from Tibet, carried across high, snow-bound Himalayan passes by the great Indian saint Guru Padmasambhava, revered here as the "Second Buddha." Unlike in many other parts of the world, Bhutan's arts, ceremonies, traditions, and festivals are not relics of a vanished age. They endure because they still carry deep religious and spiritual meaning, and because they are the heartbeat of a living culture. Masked dances (tshechus) echo through monastery courtyards, prayer flags flutter from ridges and river crossings, and the daily rhythm of village life remains closely bound to faith, community, and respect for nature. Even the national dress, the gho for men and kira for women, is worn with pride in everyday life. The western region of the country, with its enchanting valleys of Thimphu, Paro, Punakha, Wangdue, and Gangtey (Phobjikha), is the finest place to experience this cultural and natural heritage. Here, ancient dzongs rise above rivers, centuries-old temples and monasteries nestle into forested hillsides, and the glacial Phobjikha Valley welcomes the rare black-necked cranes each winter. Together, these valleys offer travellers a window into a kingdom where tradition and landscape are woven into one unforgettable experience.
