Journey details

Bhutan is the only country in the world to have adopted Tantric Mahayana Buddhism as its official religion. The faith has played, and continues to play, a central role in the cultural, ethical, and social life of the nation. Monks are held in deep respect and take an active part in community life, from performing rituals and blessing new homes to guiding the spiritual lives of villagers. Since its arrival in the mid-7th century, Tantric Buddhism has left a lasting mark on the kingdom's history and destiny, shaping the Bhutanese way of life with its wisdom and compassion. It is little wonder that Bhutan is regarded as a sacred land, rich in myths and legends. Travelling through the western region, which encompasses the breathtaking valleys of Paro, Haa, Thimphu, Punakha, Wangdue, and Gangtey (Phobjikha), feels like stepping into a series of timeless images from the past. Mighty dzongs, the strategic fortresses that serve as both administrative and monastic centres, rise above the rivers. Ancient temples, monasteries, and whitewashed stupas dot the countryside, while strings of prayer flags flutter along high ridges, carrying blessings on the mountain wind. Every moment brings a new discovery, as the traveller encounters a country whose people have chosen, with great care, to preserve its magical purity.
